G-1 and P-5 shed light on Renaissance building

G-1 and P-5 work together, lighting up the historic Montacute House

Weather-resistant wash lights and moving heads from SGM ensured a colorful and flawless operation during the six week long outdoor event “A Lantern of Light” at Montacute House in South Somerset, England.

New life brought into Montacute house

The event brief was to illuminate the architectural features of the stunning Elizabethan Montacute House and living elements within the gardens to allow guests to explore the house and grounds in a different light. Cinemattag Productions were invited to tender for the project based on their experience in outdoor lighting. Director, Matt Gardiner, designed and managed the project from quotation through to production.

The P-5 wash lights and G-1 Beams were used to wash the two large east and west facades of the house in deep colors and moving gobo designs. A 3.5 minute design was programmed and run through DMX recorders to allow subtle color fades, providing guests with a more dynamic feature than just a static one-state design. Matt Gardiner stated about the use of P-5s:

“We chose the P-5s for their industry standard brightness and color output to wash the house from distances of between 25 and 50 metres. Using a split of 21° and 43° lenses they achieved this perfectly.”

Due to the nature of the project, it was required to have fixtures that could be relied upon in all the winter conditions they would face. Previously, Matt Gardiner had been introduced to the SGM products by Clive Bailey from SGM Light UK, and they turned out to be the obvious choice for the requirements of this assignment. He elaborated:

“Our original plan, when tendering for this project, was to use other moving lights in outdoor domes to cast gobo projections onto the house. However, this route presented potential issues over the six week period of the installation. So again, we turned to SGM for a solution and the outcome was the G-1 Beams which were ideal with their IP65-rating, saving the need for domes or any other protection. All the fixtures performed perfectly without fault for the entire duration of the installation, providing a reliable solution for both ourselves and our clients at Montacute House. SGM’s service was impeccable. Especially considering the short notice decision to utilise the G-1 Beams.”

The event took place over five weekends from November through December 2016. Several hundred visitors attended the event each night during its opening between 4pm and 7pm.
Matt Gardiner rounded off by expressing his gratitude to Tracey Derbyshire and Graham Meaden at Montacute House for the cooperation and for utilising Cinemattag’s expertise to realise their ideas and designs for this successful event.

Products used

The G-1 Beam and the P-5 were more than enough to complete the purpose of this project.

For this installation, the designer deployed products from our entertainment range similar to the products displayed below, which are POI versions with a higher IP-rating for permanent outdoor installations.
