International Day of Light 2024

“Impact with Light” by Kari Kola

This temporary installation for the International Day of Light in Pula, Croatia, was created for just one night of magic. It was made to bring focus to arts and culture and celebrate both the UNESCO International Day of Light and the United Nations International Day of Living Together in Peace. The short-lived, guerilla-style installation was deliberately created in a condensed timeframe to create an extra sense of amazement.

“The Q-8 was the optimal unit for the job because I needed good output with intense saturation and wide opening angle. Also, it was very important to have high-quality IP-rated equipment. We had a thunderstorm during the night and got 25mm of rain in one hour and everything was working perfectly all the time."

 Kari Kola

The famous lighting designer behind the project, Kari Kola, used 48 Q-8’s to enlighten the best-preserved Roman amphitheatre in the world, the “Pula Arena”. The Q-8’s were used to enlighten the structural walls of the amphitheatre with the help of the powerful and compact flood/blinder fixture.

“Creating something beautiful, for no other reason than the love of art, gives me hope for positive change. It's a reminder of what we can achieve. I want to inspire everyone to start creating, chase their dreams, and make their own contribution to beauty in the world. This sentiment reflects the spirit of both the International Day of Light, which celebrates the power of light in science, culture, and art, and the International Day of Living Together in Peace, which promotes harmony among all people.”

 Kari Kola

"Impact with Light" was a collaborative effort between Kari Kola, SGM Light, Visualia Festival, and the Archaeological Museum of Istria in Pula. The event was carried out in support of the UNESCO International Day of Light and the UN International Day of Living Together in Peace.

The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. The broad theme of light will allow many different sectors of society worldwide to participate in activities that demonstrate how science, technology, art, and culture can help achieve the goals of UNESCO – education, equality, and peace.
